Let's draw a pirate ship
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

Shape the pirate ship hull
Across the lower half of the page, pull one long gunwale curve that rises at the left bow. Drop a short stern at the right and return beneath it with one deep keel curve to meet the bow.
Sketch tip: Ghost the gunwale twice before touching down. Keep the keel deeper near the middle so the ship feels buoyant rather than flat.

Raise the mast and decks
Stand one straight mast from the middle of the gunwale. Add a short deck line behind the raised bow, then build one low blank rectangular cabin above the right stern without changing the keel.
Sketch tip: Trace the mast to its hull attachment with your finger. Keep the cabin blank and low so it does not compete with the sails.

Hang the sails and rigging
Cross the mast with a short upper yardarm and a longer lower one. Hang one curved square sail from each, extend one diagonal bowsprit from the bow, and join mast, bow, and stern with exactly three taut rigging lines.
Sketch tip: Draw the two sail edges as matching bowed curves. Count the three rigging routes and check each endpoint before darkening them.

Add the pirate details
Attach one small forked pennant at the mast top. Space exactly three round portholes across the hull, then draw exactly two shallow curved seams on each sail so the cloth feels full of wind.
Sketch tip: Count three portholes and four sail seams. Curve every seam with its sail instead of drawing stiff vertical stripes.

Set the ship in rolling water
Overlap the lower hull with exactly three broken wave bands and shade them lightly in desaturated blue. Add exactly two small cloud wisps, softly shade the established sail folds, and reserve one narrow open-paper highlight inside each sail.
Sketch tip: Build the waves as three staggered bands rather than one dark block. Pull the light sail shading along the same curve as each seam and work around both white highlights.

Shade the ship under full sail
Shade the hull warm brown, the pennant muted red, the waves restrained blue, and the sail folds and clouds cool gray. Deepen the three portholes and rigging with graphite, preserve both sail highlights, and add no new shapes.
Sketch tip: Use long strokes with the hull planks and sails. Count two sails, four seams, three portholes, three rigging lines, three wave bands, and two highlights, then stop while the paper tooth still shows.
