Let's draw a cozy reading lamp
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

Block the lamp shapes
Draw a light tilted shade ellipse, then drop in the curved neck, slim stem, and oval base.
Sketch tip: Ghost the shade ellipse a few times before committing. A calm opening makes the whole lamp feel solid.

Set the desk
Refine the outside shade and base contours, then add the desk edge and a first soft shadow under the base.
Sketch tip: Keep the desk line behind the lamp light. It should ground the sketch without slicing through the base.

Refine the shade
Clarify the shade rim, underside ellipse, neck connection, stem, and base ellipse.
Sketch tip: Compare the empty space under the shade with the space above the base. That negative-space check keeps the neck from stretching.

Add the open book
Place a small open book beside the base, using two simple page shapes and a light center fold.
Sketch tip: Rotate the page if the book edges feel awkward. Short straight strokes are easier when your wrist has room.

Add chain and warmth
Hang a short pull chain under the shade, add a little warm shade tint, and deepen the existing cast shadow.
Sketch tip: Use light pressure for the yellow tint. The warmth should suggest lamplight, not cover the pencil drawing.

Darken the keeper contours, clarify the shade, base, pull chain, book, warm tint, and desk shadow.
Sketch tip: Stop before adding wall art, lettering, or extra desk clutter. The lamp, book, and glow already make the scene cozy.
