Let's draw an open matchbox
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

01
Set the sleeve angle
Draw a short horizontal rectangle tilted slightly upward to the right. Echo its lower and left edges to give the cardboard sleeve a little thickness; leave its right end clear for the tray.
Sketch tip: Ghost the two long sleeve edges before drawing them so the box keeps one consistent tilt.
-
02
Pull out the tray
From the sleeve's open right edge, extend a shallow tray about half a box length. Draw the raised rim first, then join its inner floor; keep the rim visible so the matches have a place to rest.
Sketch tip: Let the tray rim emerge from the open sleeve end; do not draw through the sleeve wall.
-
03
Lay in three matches
Lay three slim, nearly parallel sticks across the tray floor, each slanting slightly toward the upper right. Give each one a small rounded head; count all three before adding texture.
Sketch tip: Compare the gaps between the three sticks before darkening their heads.

04
Mark the sleeve surfaces
Inset a blank label rectangle on the broad sleeve face. Along the narrow lower side, add a rough striking strip. With the side of the pencil, place a broken shadow just below the box.
Sketch tip: Keep the blank label inside the sleeve edges and use short broken marks for the striking strip.
-
05
Warm the matchbox finish
Layer muted ochre on the sleeve and sticks, dusty red on the three existing heads, and graphite on the striking strip and shadow. Strengthen only the contours already in place.
Sketch tip: Use the side of the pencil for the broad shadow and keep the three red heads readable.
