Let's draw a birdhouse
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

Block in the post and house
Draw a light vertical guide, place a narrow post on it, then set a simple upright rectangle on top for the birdhouse front.
Sketch tip: Keep the post centered under the house. If the post leans, the whole birdhouse will feel like it is tipping.

Add the pitched roof
Cap the rectangle with a triangle, then draw a thick horizontal roof lip where the roof meets the house front.
Sketch tip: Let the roof overhang just a little on both sides. That small overhang makes the box feel sheltered.

Place the doorway and perch
Add a round entrance near the upper center of the front, then draw a short peg directly below it.
Sketch tip: Draw the doorway lightly as a circle before darkening the inside. A centered door keeps the simple design readable.

Divide the front planks
Pull a few subtle vertical seams down the birdhouse front and into the roof triangle, stopping at the roof lip and bottom edge.
Sketch tip: Do not make every plank the same width. Slightly uneven boards feel more hand-built.

Add grain, leaves, and color
Mark small nail dots and wood-grain strokes, grow a few leaf sprigs near the post, then add light blue, brown, and green pencil.
Sketch tip: Use color like a sketch, not paint. Leave paper gaps so the plank seams and pencil texture stay visible.

Finish the keeper lines
Deepen the roof, doorway, perch, post, plank seams, leaves, and cast shadow, clarifying only the shapes already in place.
Sketch tip: Avoid adding birds, flowers, or extra trim at the end. The last pass should make the existing birdhouse confident.
