Let's draw a pocket watch
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.
-
01
Draw the watch case
Draw one broad round case slightly right of page center and a small hinge tab on its left edge. Leave blank paper to the left for the lid.
Sketch tip: Keep the case slightly right so the lid has a full blank area to its left.
-
02
Swing open the lid
From the left hinge gap, draw one tilted oval lid to the left and a narrow inner rim; keep the original watch case in place.
Sketch tip: Let the oval lid touch the existing tab; avoid redrawing the round case.
-
03
Set the clock face
Inside the case, add a smaller round dial ring. From its center, draw one short hand toward two o’clock and one longer hand toward ten o’clock.
Sketch tip: Keep both hands joined at the dial center and make one clearly longer.
-
04
Add the winding details
At the case top, attach a short ridged winding knob. Mark a few short hour ticks inside the dial and put broken shadow strokes below case and lid.
Sketch tip: Check the knob is centered above the case before adding the short dial ticks.

05
Shade the old watch
Darken the established case and lid rims with 2B pencil, shade one side of the existing dial and knob, and soften the broken ground shadow. Leave a small paper highlight on the metal.
Sketch tip: Use the side of the pencil for quiet metal value; keep the dial legible.
