Let's draw a soccer ball
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

Start the ball circle
Draw a large light circle, then add a soft ground line where the ball will touch the grass.
Sketch tip: Turn the paper while drawing the circle. Several light passes are better than one heavy outline.

Place the center pentagon
Put a five-sided patch just below the middle of the circle and angle its bottom point downward.
Sketch tip: This patch is the anchor. If it feels centered and upright, the rest of the seams are easier to place.

Pull out the seams
Draw short seam lines from each corner of the pentagon, bending them slightly as they travel around the ball.
Sketch tip: Curve the seams with the round form. Straight ruler lines will flatten the ball.

Complete the panels
Connect the seam lines into larger patch shapes around the circle and choose a few dark panels near the edge.
Sketch tip: The edge panels can be partial. Let them disappear behind the round outline instead of forcing full shapes.

Add grass and shadow
Sketch tufts of grass around the lower edge, then add a soft cast shadow under the ball.
Sketch tip: Use short, uneven grass strokes. A little messiness makes the ball feel like it is sitting outside.

Finish the match ball
Darken the keeper seams and black patches, then add gentle shading to the white panels so the ball stays round.
Sketch tip: Leave highlights on the upper panels. Too much shading everywhere will make the ball look muddy.
