Let's draw a garden gnome
Treat this as one small practice round: build the subject lightly, notice the shapes, then darken only the lines that help the finished sketch.

01
Block the hat
Draw a tall leaning pointed hat guide, then place a small rounded body underneath it with a light center line.
Sketch tip: The hat is the whole silhouette. Keep it big enough that the beard and body can tuck underneath.
-
02
Tuck in nose and beard
Add a soft hat brim, place a round nose under the brim, and sketch a large tapered beard down the center.
Sketch tip: Let the beard overlap the body guide. That overlap makes the gnome feel cozy instead of stacked.

03
Set the small stance
Clarify the coat sides and add two rounded boots below the beard.
Sketch tip: Keep the boots simple and low. Oversized boots can steal attention from the hat and beard.
-
04
Add brim and sleeves
Darken the hat brim a little, then add small mitten hands and sleeve shapes on both sides of the beard.
Sketch tip: Place the hands at about the same height, but do not make them identical. A little unevenness feels handmade.

05
Texture the garden
Add soft beard lines, grass tufts near the feet, light red on the hat, and blue-gray on the coat.
Sketch tip: Use broken texture lines in the beard. Too many dark lines can make the white beard look heavy.

06
Finish the little gnome
Darken the keeper contours, clarify the beard and hands, and deepen the existing color and ground shadow.
Sketch tip: Stop before adding eyes or a busy background. The hidden face and big hat are what make this gnome work.
